Reading and Phonics

We use Monster Phonics at our school, which is an interactive, fun way of learning our letter sounds to help us to read and write.  Parents we would like to invite you on Wednesday 11th November 2020 to a Monster Phonics Webinar .  Just click on the link to attend!

This is the Reading and Phonics Powerpoint from the last Phonics Parent's and Carer's Meeting

We endeavour to develop a love of reading that will stay with our children all their lives.
Children are taught to read using a variety of different strategies. We encourage children to use their phonic knowledge and comprehension skills to develop their understanding of the text. We hear our children read individually at least once a week but often more frequently. We also have guided reading sessions focussing on a particular reading skill.
We use a range of books from a variety of schemes including Oxford Reading Tree, Nelson 'New Way' & 'Wellington Square' and 'Edge' stories. We also add other texts which are banded together to form a progressive reading scheme. Within this children select books from different genres including information books, playscripts, poems and fiction.
Our book based curriculum encourages our children to think deeply about a text and explore characters, setting and plot. We base much of the children's learning on the class novel which gives a contextual purpose for learning.
These are some of the websites we use in school to support children's reading. Please follow these links to continue this support at home.

These are some of the websites we use in school to support Children's reading.

Oxford Owl - a great website for sharing texts and developing reading strategies.

Pobble 365 - a wonderful website to develop vocabulary and expression.

First News - a newspaper for children. Interesting and thought provoking.

Mrs Hollands, our English subject leader has compiled a useful booklet with advice when reading with your child out of school.   Reading and Spelling Parent's Booklet.

Phonics

Daily, discrete phonics lessons are taught every day in Puffins and Kingfishers. Teachers and teaching assistants lead phonics session in differentiated groups. This enables us to teach phonic skills to small groups of children. Skills are taught progressively and are differentiated very closely to each child’s learning needs. We use LCP materials to guide our teaching.

We hope that these phonics websites are useful for you to share with your children at home. The first two links are especially good. The first explains about phonics and the second shows the actions and exact sounds we use to help the children remember the sounds.
